Make a Ruby Red Juice

Description

We are starting to see a lot of fresh grapefruits in the markets at the moment. They are perfect during winter for juicing with a powerhouse of healthy nutrients. I like Ruby Reds however you can choose red or yellow grapefruits for this recipe.

I love the flavour of the ruby red grapefruits in juice. They have the perfect sweet bitterness and when combined with the apples and oranges create a very drinkable tangy, citrus juice flavour.

Ingredients

  • 2 ruby red grapefruits

  • 2 apples

  • 3 oranges

  • 1 ginger piece (2cm)

Juicing Time: 5 mins

Juice Qty: 750ml

Serves: 3

Preparation

Grapefruit

  • Remove the outer skin keeping as much white pith as possible

  • Cut into halves or quarters to fit into the wide chute

Apples

  • Remove the stems and remove any stickers

  • Juice apples whole with skin and seeds

  • Cut in half or quarters if too big to fit into the wide chute

Oranges

  • Remove the orange skin leaving as much white pith as possible

  • Juice whole or cut in half if too big to fit into the wide chute

Ginger

  • Cut off a 2cm thick piece

  • Cut into thin slices leaving the skin on

Method

This juice is super simple to make.

Add any of the pieces of fruit one at a time to the juice and let the press squeeze each piece fully before adding the next piece.

I like to pop the ginger in about half way to allow the rest of the fruits to pick up more of the ginger flavour as they press through the juice machine.

Tip: Externally, fresh grapefruit is a natural antiseptic and can be used to help disinfect and heal wounds and abrasions.

Health Benefits

Grapefruit - Red

The Ruby Red grapefruits target the heart and blood. They help clear plaque from arteries and help lower blood pressure. Galacturonic acid (found only in grapefruit) has the ability to break up and dislodge fatty plaque buildup in the arteries and remove it completely from the body.

Grapefruit juice also eases constipation and improves digestion by increasing the flow of gastric juices.

Grapefruits are an exceptional fruit that have very strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. They are a great source of vitamin C and bioflavonoids which help to boost the immune system.

The grapefruit seeds, which also get juiced, are also a powerful natural medicine. Grapefruit seed extract is extremely effective at killing dozens of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and other harmful organisms.

Orange

Oranges help quench your thirst and moisten your lungs, letting the energy flow freely in the chest. They also have a wide variety of phytonutrient compounds like anthocyanins, citrus flavanones, and various polyphenols.

Oranges are full of lung-friendly antioxidants and packed with vitamin C which is well known for fighting infection and inflammation.

The whole food type of vitamin C, found in oranges, stimulates your body’s immune system into action so you can say goodbye to your cold and may even reduce the length of time you feel sick or even how seriously it develops.

Oranges destroy free radicals that cause signs of skin aging, scouring the intestine and flushing toxins from the body.  Freshly squeezed orange juice is a predigested food. This allows for immediate absorption of all its abundant healing properties.

Apple

Apples are the Queen of all fruits. the old saying "an apple a day..." is truly ancient wisdom as they protect and heal every human body system and cell.

Apples are a true healing food.

Apple juice provides living water to support the liver’s hydration capabilities, so it can store the water and then release it back into the bloodstream when the blood becomes dehydrated and isn’t flowing very well.

Apples are high in a soluble fibre (still in the juice) called pectin that forms a gel-like substance in the intestine. This gel can bind to cholesterol, removing it from the body, which may aid in reducing blood pressure levels.

Apples also starve viruses. When their pectin fibers enter the digestive system, they release phytochemicals that bind onto viruses, shrouding viral cells so that they can’t feed and proliferate.

They are also high in malic acid that binds with any heavy metals in the brain. The word 'malic' comes from the Latin word 'malum', meaning 'apple' which is why I recommend to people who have brain or neurological symptoms to consume more apples.
